What is in this dragon fruit smoothie
For this recipe, I used:
- pink dragon fruit
- mango
- banana
- orange
Here I used the pink dragon fruit variety. The fruit has a mild floral taste and is much sweeter than the white variety. I’ve found the white dragon fruit is bland and isn’t as sweet.
The mango I used here is a ripe Julie mango. It is my favorite type of mango and is extremely sweet. But, you can use your preferred mango variety here.
There are lots of other flavors you can pair with dragon fruit to make smoothies. Fruits like pineapple, watermelon, pawpaw and berries are all great choices.
By the way, I used some of these fruits in my dragon fruit tropical salad. You have to try it too, it’s so good!
Oh and if you’re interested in other exotic drinks, take a look at this giant granadilla (barbadine) punch.
How to make this dragon fruit smoothie
Peel the dragon fruit
Step 1: Wash the fruit thoroughly. To peel the dragon fruit, cut the two ends off. You can see what I did here.
Step 2: Next, cut the fruit in half along its length. Once that’s done, you can very simply and easily peel the dragon fruit skin off the flesh. It’s that simple. Although unnecessary, I cubed the fruit and added it to the blender.
Prep the rest of the ingredients
Step 3: Wash, peel and slice the banana. Do the same for the mango and keep the mango seed in the fridge to enjoy later as a quick, delicious snack. Add the cut fruits to the blender.
Step 4: Wash and slice the orange in half. Squeeze its juice, remove the seeds and add to the blender.
Blend
Step 5: With all the ingredients added to the blender, blend until smooth. I have the Ninja kitchen system (get it on Amazon) and it works so well to turn these fruits into the smooth, refreshing drink you see here. Serve cold.
This dragon fruit smoothie is so good, you won’t need to add extra water, sweetener or anything. Plus, you get all the benefits from these vitamin- and antioxidant-rich fruits.
Benefits of dragon fruit
The pink dragon fruits have moderate levels of fiber and decent levels of Vitamin C, magnesium and iron. It also contains compounds called betacyanins.
Betacyanins are proven antioxidants, meaning they can neutralize harmful free radicals which can damage your cells. Betacyanins are also the compounds that give the fruit its pink color; and it is also responsible for the color in beets and Swiss chard.
If dragon fruit is a little too expensive, use beets as a substitute in this smoothie recipe. You’ll get a similar color and the important compounds but, with beets, you’ll have a more earthy tasting smoothie.
