Ingredients

  • sweet potatoes: Any variety of sweet potato can be used here like garnet (yellow), Japanese (white), and purple. I’m using the garnet variety here but I’ve found the Japanese variety tastes better and has a greater, roasted depth of flavor.
  • butter: this is optional! You can add just about anything to the baked sweet potatoes like veggies, meat, beans, chives, sour cream, salsa and bacon bits. For this simple recipe, I added garlic butter.

How to make baked sweet potatoes

Prep

The first thing to do is to preheat the oven to 425°F.

Next up is to wash the sweet potato to get as much dirt off. Leaving the peel on is pretty important since it infuses a lot of great flavor into the sweet potato.

Once washed, I stuck a small knife into the sweet potato at different points. This helps the steam escape easily during the baking process.

Place the sweet potato on a baking sheet.

Make

Pop the baking sheet in the oven to bake the sweet potato for 40 to 60 minutes or until it is fully soft inside. Check for doneness by inserting a knife. If it can go all the way through easily, it is done.

The exact time will depend on the size and shape of the sweet potato you are using. This one is huge and weighs 1 pound so it took about 60 minutes to cook fully. But, smaller and thinner potatoes will definitely bake faster.

Baked sweet potato out of the oven

Remove from the oven, cut in half and serve with your favorite toppings. Here, I added some garlic butter. It’s so good!

Serve warm for breakfast with eggs, sausages and salad or for lunch with grilled or baked meat or fish and a nice salad.

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 425°F.
  • Wash the sweet potato thoroughly.
  • Pierce the sweet potato with a fork or knife in different spots.
  • Place the sweet potato on a baking sheet.
  • Bake in the oven for 40 to 60 minutes until soft all the way through (smaller sweet potatoes will cook faster, thicker ones will need more time).
  • Remove from the oven.
  • Cut the cooked sweet potato in half.
  • Add a cube of butter or toppings of your choice.
  • Serve warm.
