Tropical dragon fruit salad ingredients

I tried to keep this recipe as simple as possible so I only used four ingredients. But, don’t let that limit you. Feel free to make this salad your own with seasonal fruits from your part of the world. Here are what I used:

  • dragon fruit: I used the pink dragon fruit variety here, but feel free to use the white version as well. To me, the pink is sweeter and slightly floral compared to the white fruit.
  • pineapple: this adds such vibrance to the salad.
  • mango: I used a Julie mango from my tree here. But, any sweet, ripe mango will compliment this recipe.
  • lemon: this adds contrasting flavors with the acid. Swap for lime or any citrus juice if you don’t have lemon.

Optional ingredient ideas

As for optional ingredients, these go really well with dragon fruit:

  • banana
  • watermelon
  • papaya
  • berries
  • five fingers (carambola)
  • herbs like mint or basil

If you use salt, garlic, chadon beni and fresh pepper, you can turn this sweet tropical fruit salad into a chow recipe. You’ll get all the sweet, salty and spicy flavors in one tasty treat.

Or you can turn the salad into a wonderful smoothie. Check out my dragon fruit smoothie recipe here.

How to make this tropical dragon fruit salad

Cut and peel the dragon fruit

Step 1: It is easy to peel the dragon fruit. Simply cut off both ends of the dragon fruit – top and bottom.

Step 2: Slice in half and peel the soft, thick skin off the fruit. You can see the slight difference in color between the flesh and the skin.

Step 3: Slice and cube the dragon fruit .

Prep the other ingredients

Step 4: Peel and slice the other ingredients like the pineapple and mango. I used a freshly picked lemon from my tree here and sliced it in half.

Toss together

Step 5: Once you’ve prepped all the ingredients, you just have to toss them together. Squeeze the lemon juice over the pieces for a nice, citrusy contrast to the sweetness of the fruits.

Step 6: Serve immediately or place in the fridge to chill for an hour or so before serving. The bright pink color of the dragon fruit will bleed into the other fruits. Don’t worry about that, I found the sweetness of the dragon fruit added to the pineapple – which wasn’t very ripe here.

More about dragon fruit

Dragon fruit is difficult to grow – it requires hand-pollination, oftentimes at night. So, it is understandable that the fruit is expensive.

The pink variety contains betacyanins, which are antioxidant compounds that are responsible for its color. You can also find these compounds in beets and Swiss chard too.

Besides antioxidants, dragon fruit also contains low to moderate levels of fiber, Vitamin C, magnesium and iron.
