Ingredients for baked apples

  • apples: most apple varieties can be used for this recipe but my preference is Gala apples.
  • lemon juice: reduces oxidation of the apples.
  • butter: in my experience, unsalted butter works the best here.
  • brown sugar: I’m using this one.
  • cinnamon: this adds comforting flavor to the slices.
  • nutmeg: also adds unique flavor.
  • salt: accentuates the sweetness of the baked apple.
  • cornstarch: thickens up the liquid released from the apples.
  • water: for mixing the cornstarch.

Equipment

No special equipment is needed for this recipe though an apple corer would be pretty handy.

How to make baked apples

Prep

Preheat the oven to 350°F.

Wash and peel the apples. Cut into half-inch to one-inch pieces, removing the seeds. Place in a large bowl and mix in the lemon juice, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt.

Pop the butter in the microwave for 10 to 20 seconds to melt. Pour over the cut apple slices and mix thoroughly.

Next, whisk the cornstarch and water together to form a slurry. Add to the coated apple slices and mix again. This will help thicken up the butter, sugar and apple juices while cooking and give you that apple pie filling texture. Yum!
