Turmeric benefits
Turmeric has been used for thousands of years particularly in India, where it is widely recommended in Ayurvedic medicine.
Modern studies have identified curcumin as the major component of turmeric and it is this compound that is responsible for most of turmeric’s benefits. It’s tough to be brief on how good curcumin is!
Many studies have shown curcumin is anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, pain relieving and aids wound healing. It may also help with managing neurodegenerative disorders, liver damage and diabetes.
There are a few caveats however. Curcumin has low bioavailability, meaning our bodies don’t absorb much of it.
One reason could be that curcumin is fat soluble so taking it with lipids like oil or dairy will be helpful with absorption (this 2024 Austrian study proves it). Maybe that’s why golden milk and curries are so popular in Indian culture. Note, oat milk works great too according to this 2025 European study.
An old study also found that when curcumin was taken with piperine (the main compound in black pepper), its bioavailability jumped by 2000%.
So, having turmeric with pepper or fats or both will help your body to absorb more curcumin.
Let’s get into a few more recent studies now.
Effects on the body
A 2025 Brazilian study conducted on irritable bowel syndrome patients found a combination of curcumin (1000mg) and piperine (10mg) helped to reduce muscle depletion and improved fat free mass. So, this combo improved body composition in the participants.
This 2024 Thai study showed even more benefits. Subjects in this study were given 1500mg of curcumin daily for an entire year while their body weight, body mass index, fasting plasma glucose, insulin resistance and other parameters were tested quarterly. At the end of the year, the curcumin group had significant decreases in fasting blood glucose and HbA1c levels. Body mass index, body weight and insulin resistance were also lowered.
Effects on pain
A 2025 Iranian study compared the effects of Ibuprofen, bromelain (compound found in pineapples) and bromelain mixed with turmeric on pain in patients after an orthodontic procedure. Both bromelain alone and bromelain with turmeric showed good pain control, similar to or better than Ibuprofen.
That would make pineapple and turmeric useful for pain management and I have a great wellness shot below that combines the two!
There are so many more studies to explore but I’ll stop there for now and get into the turmeric shots recipes.
Quick word of caution
When taking in large quantities, turmeric can cause digestive issues like nausea, diarrhea, and upset tummies. It is also considered a blood thinner so it should be used with caution.
Turmeric may also affect iron absorption in your body and some persons may be allergic to the spice. So, speak to your health practitioners about having turmeric shots especially if you are on blood thinners. And note I am not a doctor and this isn’t medical advice.
